What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the discipline of making your content the source an AI assistant selects when composing an answer, rather than simply one of ten blue links.

The precise meaning
A generative engine retrieves candidate passages, decides which are trustworthy, then composes an answer and cites what it used. GEO optimises for all three stages: retrievability, trustworthiness and quotability.
- Retrievability: the passage answers the query directly
- Trustworthiness: claims are attributable and internally consistent
- Quotability: the sentence survives being lifted out of context
What it is not
It is not prompt trickery or a way to force brand mentions. Attempts to manipulate these systems are unreliable, detectable and quickly neutralised by model updates.
- Not keyword stuffing for language models
- Not a replacement for technical SEO fundamentals
- Not measurable by position alone
