Under Construction Pages That Do Not Waste the Traffic

A temporary landing page during a rebuild is normal. The failure mode is leaving it returning 200 while every real URL 404s — after which recovery takes months.

Status codes are the whole game

Serve 503 with Retry-After for genuinely temporary maintenance so crawlers know to come back. Returning 200 with a placeholder is treated as your new content.

  • 503 plus Retry-After for maintenance windows
  • Never 200 redirect everything to one placeholder page
  • Keep existing URLs returning their own responses where possible

Make the page earn its keep

Since the traffic arrives anyway, give visitors a date, a way to be notified and a reason to come back — then measure how many wait.

  • Specific launch timing rather than "coming soon"
  • Email capture with a real confirmation message
  • A contact route for urgent enquiries

Questions people ask about under construction page

Will an under-construction page hurt SEO?
Only if left too long or returned with the wrong status code. Short maintenance with a proper 503 response is generally safe.
Can we keep rankings while rebuilding?
Yes if real URLs keep working during development. Build in a staging environment protected from crawling and only cut over when ready.
Should we show a coming-soon page for a brand-new domain?
It is fine, provided real content follows quickly. A placeholder page alone has nothing to rank for and should be noindex until it carries substance.
